Duration: 3 days 2 nights
Route: Hanoi – Cuc Phuong National Park – Ninh Binh – Hanoi
Contents
Overview
This 3-day adventure blends Vietnam’s oldest national park with the limestone-and-wetland landscapes of Ninh Binh. You’ll trek through dense rainforest in Cuc Phuong National Park—Vietnam’s first national park, established in 1962—then shift into the calm beauty of Van Long’s wetlands and ancient history at Hoa Lu.
Expect muddy jungle trails, real ascents/descents, and a rewarding sense of going beyond the usual day-trip route—an untamed expedition with a soft landing in “Halong Bay on land.”

Why this 3D2N adventure works
1) Real jungle first, comfort later. You earn the views with mud-on-boots trekking, then enjoy calm wetlands and heritage sites.
2) Nature variety in one short trip. Rainforest biodiversity → limestone valleys → wetland habitat → ancient capital.
3) A strong “story arc.” Day 1 introduces the forest and conservation, Day 2 is your deep trek, Day 3 is the panoramic finale.
Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Hanoi – Cuc Phuong National Park (L/D)
08:00 Pick-up from your Hanoi hotel. Drive about 120 km southwest to Cuc Phuong (approx. 2.5 hours). Cuc Phuong was made a forest reserve in 1960 and became a national park in 1962.
EPRC (Endangered Primate Rescue Center)
Start with a meaningful visit to the EPRC to understand Vietnam’s primate protection work through rescue, rehabilitation, release, conservation breeding, education, and research.
Cave of Prehistoric Man + short forest trek
Continue deeper into the park to visit prehistoric cave sites (often referred to as the Cave of Prehistoric Man / Ancient People Cave), then take a short trek to learn about the park’s flora and fauna.
Lunch in the park (stilt-house area), then transfer to your accommodation.
Dinner and overnight at a national park bungalow.
Trekking distance: ~7–10 km
Overnight: Cuc Phuong bungalow
Optional (evening): Night bird/animal watching with park rangers (subject to availability and weather).
Day 2: Cuc Phuong Jungle Trekking to Khanh Village (B/L/D)
After breakfast, meet at the trailhead for your real jungle day. A national park ranger supports the trek so you stay on route and learn more about the ecosystem.
Expect classic Cuc Phuong conditions: humid air, layered forest canopy, dirt paths that can be muddy, plus steady ascents/descents. The reward is the feeling of moving through a living, breathing rainforest—quiet, green, and raw.
You’ll descend into a peaceful valley and reach Khanh Village, home to the Muong ethnic community along the Buoi River. Lunch is served at a local house.
After the trek, transfer to your next accommodation in Ninh Binh.
Dinner and overnight in Ninh Binh area.
Trekking distance: ~15–17 km
Overnight: Ninh Binh accommodation
Day 3: Mua Cave – Van Long – Hoa Lu – Hanoi (B/L)
Sunrise option: Mua Cave viewpoint
Wake early for the iconic climb to Mua Cave viewpoint—around 500 stone steps to a panoramic view over Tam Coc’s rivers and rice fields (best in early morning light).
Van Long Wetland Nature Reserve (bamboo rowboat)
After breakfast, drive to Van Long and board a bamboo rowboat to glide through still waters framed by limestone peaks and wetlands. Van Long is noted as a habitat for the critically endangered Delacour’s langur (often described as found exclusively here in the wild).
Hoa Lu Ancient Capital
Lunch at a local restaurant, rest, then visit Hoa Lu, the capital of Vietnam from 968–1009, including key temples and the historic setting among karst mountains.
Return to Hanoi in the afternoon.
