Duration: 3 days 2 nights
Route: Hanoi – Mai Chau – Pu Luong – Kho Muong
Contents
Overview
Pu Luong Nature Reserve is one of Northern Vietnam’s most beautiful “slow” landscapes—lush forests, limestone ridges, rice terraces layered like waves, and villages where Thai and Muong communities keep daily life wonderfully simple. This 3-day trek is designed for travelers who want real countryside, not staged tourism: you’ll hike through valleys and fields, cross rivers, meet locals along the way, and spend your nights in traditional stilt-house homestays.
Travel style: Trekking + local culture + homestay immersion
Pace: Moderate (multiple trekking days, river crossings, some steep climbs)
Best for: Nature lovers, photographers, active travelers, culture seekers

Why this 3D2N trekking route works
1) It’s a true journey, not a loop. You move deeper each day—Mai Chau → Pu Luong → Kho Muong.
2) Nature + culture stay balanced. Big views, rice fields, and forest trails—paired with real village life.
3) The trek progression makes sense. Day 1 warms you up, Day 2 is your “hero” trek, Day 3 closes strong without overloading.
4) Homestays turn scenery into memories. Nights with locals make the experience feel human, not just “beautiful.”
Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Hanoi – Mai Chau – Pu Luong (L/D)
After breakfast, your guide picks you up at your hotel in Hanoi. Depart for Hoa Binh Province (about 80 km west of Hanoi). On the way, stop at a local market to get a first glimpse of rural trading life.
Mai Chau Valley + Pom Coong Village
Continue to Mai Chau and stop in Pom Coong Village. Rest and enjoy lunch in a typical Thai stilt house—simple, welcoming, and perfectly placed before your first walk.
Afternoon trek into Pu Luong
Begin your hike into Pu Luong Nature Reserve, walking through rice fields and mountain backroads. You’ll cross small villages and see everyday life unfolding around you—farmers at work, children on village paths, and the quiet rhythm of the valley.
Evening: homestay with a local Thai family
Arrive at a Thai stilt-house homestay, enjoy dinner, and settle in for the night.
Trekking distance: ~5–7 km off-the-beaten-path hike
Overnight: Thai stilt-house homestay (Pu Luong)
Trek to Kho Muong Village (B/L/D)
Optional sunrise moment (early risers)
Wake before sunrise if you’d like: watch light spill over the mountain tops while farmers begin their morning routines. If you want, you can join in briefly for a real taste of rural life.
Full trekking day (5–6 hours)
After breakfast at the homestay, start a longer trekking day. The first stretch is the most challenging, with steeper climbs and river crossings. Then the trail opens into easier paths and breathtaking viewpoints over valleys, terraces, rainforest and streams—one of Pu Luong’s most rewarding routes.
Picnic lunch in Hin Village
Enjoy a picnic lunch when you reach Hin Village, surrounded by nature.
Continue to Hieu Village → Kho Muong
Continue trekking toward Hieu Village (often considered one of the most photogenic villages in the area), then push on to Kho Muong, a remote valley settlement tucked behind limestone scenery.
Arrive and enjoy free time: stroll the village, chat with locals, or relax in the eco-style homestay supported by community initiatives.
Trekking distance: ~12–15 km total
Overnight: Traditional Thai-style stilt house (Kho Muong)
Day 3: Mai Chau – Hanoi (B/L)
Morning trek (3 hours)

Continue to Pho Doan Village, rest again, then meet your driver on the main road.
